Foam Management and Transition to IMO/SOLAS 2026 Standards

New BSM TECH Service: Foam Management and Transition to IMO/SOLAS 2026 Standards

BSM TECH Marine Services proudly introduces a new, pioneering service for shipowners, fleet managers, and operators who must comply with the upcoming IMO and SOLAS regulations on firefighting foams. Starting from January 1st, 2026, the use of foams containing PFOS/PFAS will be completely prohibited, creating an urgent need to replace obsolete foams such as AR-AFFF and C6-AFFF.

The service provided by BSM TECH covers every stage of this transition: from the removal of existing stocks, to the decontamination of tanks, and the refilling with new Fluorine-Free foams, along with the issuance of all required certificates and technical documentation.

Why is this change necessary?

Foams like AR-AFFF and C6-AFFF contain fluorinated substances (PFAS), also known as “forever chemicals.” These do not degrade in the environment, accumulate in ecosystems, and have proven harmful effects on human health.

The European Union, through Regulation (EU) 2019/1021 on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and the REACH Regulation (EC 1907/2006), has already imposed strict restrictions. Additionally, the Basel Convention regulates the transboundary movement and disposal of hazardous waste.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO), under the SOLAS Convention (Safety of Life at Sea), has mandated a total ban effective January 1st, 2026. Classification Societies and Port Authorities will oversee compliance, with severe sanctions for violations.
