Background
In the maritime industry, maintaining HVAC and galley systems is not only a matter of comfort but of safety and hygiene. In two recent projects, a luxury Mega Yacht and a Bulk Carrier, BSM Tech carried out specialized cleaning and restoration of Air Handling Units (AHU), fan coil units, and galley systems.
Preliminary inspections revealed significant contamination, microbial growth, and grease accumulation in HVAC and galley ducts, creating health hazards and fire risks.
The challenge
The restoration had to be completed within tight deadlines due to vessel schedules, while meeting the highest international standards. For HVAC systems, NADCA protocols were required, while galley cleaning was performed under EVHA standards. Certification at the end of the process was mandatory.
The process
BSM Tech deployed HVAC engineers, marine technicians, and certified Fire & Water Restoration Specialists, applying NADCA and EVHA protocols.
On the Mega Yacht, the scope included:
Video inspection of ductwork and AHU units.
Full AHU cleaning using negative air machines with HEPA filtration.
Restoration of fan coil units, mold removal, and filter replacement.
Galley system cleaning following EVHA standards, with complete grease and microbial removal.
On the Bulk Carrier, the focus was on large-scale AHUs and fan coil systems affected by particulate contamination and salt deposits. NADCA-certified mechanical and chemical cleaning methods were applied, documented with before-and-after video inspections.
Independent laboratory testing was conducted both before and after the intervention, ensuring objective, transparent results.
Results
Both vessels were delivered with NADCA and EVHA certifications. Airflow efficiency improved, energy consumption decreased, and hygiene standards were fully restored. The galley of the yacht was declared fire-safe and compliant with European ventilation hygiene requirements.
Shipowners received a full technical report, photographic and video documentation, and compliance certificates.
Conclusion
BSM Tech once again proved its ability to deliver high-level maritime restoration services. By applying NADCA and EVHA standards, combined with independent laboratory verification, the company ensured safe, efficient, and certified HVAC and galley systems in both a luxury yacht and a bulk carrier.
